September 24 witnessed the opening of the 2021 Guangdong 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo (MSRE) in Guangzhou. The dignitaries who were present and addressed the opening ceremony included Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC, Lu Pengqi, vice president of the China Council for Promotion of International Trade, Zhang Shuofu, member of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and secretary of Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee, Zhang Xin, vice governor of Guangdong Province, and Raja Dato' Nushirwan Zainal Abidin, Malaysian Ambassador to China. Vladimir Norov, secretary general of Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Mbelwa Kairuki, Tanzanian Ambassador to China, made a video speech respectively.
Mr. Leung Chun-ying noted that as an important platform for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to exchange and cooperate with the countries and regions along the “Belt & Road”, the MSRE has been fully affirmed and the Expo widely praised by all walks of life at home and abroad.
He also stated that as the Greater Bay Area development is at a new historical starting point, efforts shall be made to implement Central Government’s arrangements, enrich the practice of “one country, two systems”, and deepen reform and opening-up; this will help enhance the cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, accelerate the cultivation of the first echelon that leads the quality development, play a supporting, exemplary and leading role better in the construction of the “Belt & Road”, and better serve the overall national development. He hopes that the guests can seize the opportunities provided by this MSRE to deepen exchanges, build consensus, capture business opportunities and promote cooperation.

Lu Pengqi said that the Expo has leveraged the advantages of the domestic market, the potentials of domestic demand, new technologies and new means to shown us rich content, which has erected an effective platform for Chinese and foreign enterprises to have interaction, make exchanges and seek cooperation. He believes that participants will exploit the opportunity to deepen exchanges and talks, increase mutual understanding, look for business opportunities and strive to achieve more results in practical cooperation.
Zhang Shuofu stated that Guangzhou will continue the in-depth study and implementation of the important speeches and instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping; base itself on the new stage of development to follow out the new development concept and serve the formation of a new development pattern; seize hold of the major historical opportunities, including construction of the “Two Areas”, synergy of the “Two Cities” and building of the “Two Cooperation Zones”; continuously expand opening-up and deepen the exchanges and cooperation with the countries (regions) along the “Belt & Road” in humanities, economy and trade, science and technology, and the fight against the pandemic; speed up the construction of a central city of international consumption and a center of international exchanges; work hard to build a central node city in the domestic circulation and a strategic link city in the “dual circulation” with the domestic economy and international engagement reinforcing each other; join hands with all sides for the steady and far-reaching construction of the “Belt & Road”.

Zhang Xin indicated that holding the Expo is an important initiative of Guangdong to meet the proposal of President Xi Jinping for the co-construction of the “Belt & Road”. After 7 years of development, the Expo has become a high-level specialized international platform with global influence for cooperation in economy and trade. Guangdong will expand opening-up in broader field and create a market-oriented international business environment under the rule of law to provide a wider space for stepping up the cooperation with the countries and regions along the “Belt & Road”.
The Expo will be held at Zone A of Canton Fair Complex from September 24 to 26, which is composed of three exhibition areas of international cooperation and exchanges, international platforms and brands, and foreign trade bases, as well as four specialized exhibition areas featuring AI, digital economy, silk road e-commerce, and imported food. Covering an exhibition area of 7,000 square kilometers, the Expo will have national booths of 64 countries and regions and more than 1,000 enterprise exhibitors. More than 40 supporting activities will be held concurrently for cooperation and exchanges.
